Layout Designer and & Typesetter at SoapboxOur mission is to communicate ideas that matter and we work for policymakers, NGOs, think tanks and research organisations to help their messages reach the right audiences. We work on all types of creative output including print publications, infographics, animation, websites and other digital products.
This is a varied role in our design team, with a focus on publications; whether you’re typesetting a research report, creating infographics, or designing an impactful policy publication, you’ll always be working with interesting clients and meaningful ideas.
Our clients include Chatham House, Imperial College London, UNICEF and many more. We are a busy agency of around 30 staff working on over 1,000 jobs each year. Our main office is in London, but this role is based in our smaller Bath office, with four other employees. Day-to-day work is in Bath but there will be an occasional requirement to attend meetings in London and elsewhere as the need arises.
About the role:
The successful candidate will be working with our in-house designers and lead editor in Bath, assisting this small but expanding team with all aspects of publication design.
The main focus of the job will be typesetting complex text within existing Indesign templates and occasionally designing new publication templates. This will include expert knowledge and guidance on issues such as typeface, page set up and typographic detailing. It will also involve designing detailed charts and tables, picture research, and cover design, often to tight deadlines and for clients with very particular demands.
As our clients move towards digital-first communications we are particularly keen to appoint someone who can help strengthen our already highly successful publications design business, but also produce work that will translate well into digital uses.
You’ll need to have professional experience as a designer, including producing long-format publications. Superb InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator skills are essential. The successful candidate will have a meticulous eye for detail and excellent time management skills. You’ll be expected to juggle multiple projects, often to tight deadlines.
Our designers are in direct contact with clients every day, so experience of working in a customer-facing role is beneficial, and you’ll need an excellent command of written and spoken English.
Applicants should have a degree or equivalent in graphic design or a similar discipline.
An interest in current affairs, public policy and open data would be beneficial.
