Hato are looking for a highly driven and ambitious Design Director to join our studio in Hoxton.

Founded in 2009 by Ken Kirton & Jackson Lam, Hato has since evolved into a multidisciplinary design and experiential studio offering Graphic, Digital and Design services for a range of clients across commercial and cultural sectors, such as The Tate, TFL, D&AD, and Hayward Gallery.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the design department in the London studio, delivering all aspects of design. They will oversee and deliver projects briefed by the Creative Director, ensuring that the design output is kept at a high standard, and delivered on time. The candidate will need to have a proven record in delivering successful campaigns, exhibition and/or experiential design, strong understanding of digital interfaces and printed matter.

At Hato, our work covers a broad range of fields from education, digital tools, exhibition designs, apps and events. We work as a lean team of senior members, each with a satellite pool of freelancers that are specialists in working in various fields. We’re looking for someone who enjoys being the sole designer on a project and at the same time enjoys scaling the team up as and when the project requires. The chosen candidate should have a vast knowledge of the creative & design fields and is constantly striving to increase this field of knowledge.

The right member will be commercially astute and have excellent communication skills, naturally feeding into the strategies of the new business team. They will be expected to have a high degree of client contact and as part of a close-knit team communicate your ideas. You should be ambitious and keen to have an influence, driven by the idea that your role will help to shape the business’s future.
As guidance, you should have at least 10 years of experience or equivalent.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Autonomous in delivering projects from design to project management
• Ability to effectively brief, lead, collaborate and delegate, including outlining work to be carried out by design team, freelancers, and ensuring projects can be met and delivery is of the right standard.
• Ability to realise the concepts into a high standard design outcomes, develop the direction of projects in collaboration with client and directors.
• Commercially aware, with the ability to manage project budgets and production
• Articulate in the presentation of ideas, through attending meetings and being able to develop concepts that are both creative and suitable for client needs.
• Ability to navigate feedback and clients challenges, being confident in front of clients while presenting work, with a clear awareness of the communication challenge and commercial objectives of a brief.
• Ability to mock up visualisations and articulate these into presentations quickly and to confidently deliver designs to meet internal, client and production deadlines.
