Main duties and responsibilities

Artwork production, commissioning and selection

•Produce or update artwork for a range of graphic outputs, working from creative concepts to delivery, review, approval and publication, and within ODI brand guidelines.
•Package artwork for both digital and print use.
•Commission external designers and print/multimedia suppliers, and oversee the quality of externally delivered artwork/artworked assets.
Infographics and data visualisation
•Translate research findings into impactful infographics or other data visualisations.
•Support researchers and communications staff to produce meaningful briefs for visual design agencies and designers.

Web and social media

• Produce artwork, figures or other graphics to accompany and draw attention to key ODI messages on the website and social media, as part of communications campaigns.
•Support design-related projects across online channels, including the website.
•Developing visual design solutions for ODI flagship and priority publications, producing bespoke visuals/visual identities where appropriate, and ensuring ODI makes the most of opportunities for innovation in its publications.

Internal communications

•Develop internal communications branding.
•Collate and produce the rolling presentation for internal display screens, in liaison with communications colleagues.
•Provide advice, guidance and practical support in developing effective presentations on PowerPoint and other systems.
Guidance, support and training
•Provide advice, support or direct operational assistance to ODI research or consultancy projects with large design components or deliverables.
•Organise and deliver training for ODI communications staff on design best practices.
•Develop and update how-to guides on design processes or systems.
•Communicate changes to brand and design guidelines with colleagues.


•Be the guardian of the ODI visual brand, championing best practices and creativity, and setting standards for high-quality, impactful design.
•Develop clear systems and quality criteria for using design, to be applied across ODI.

Person specification

• Demonstrable portfolio and experience in a graphic design role, or a 2.1/1st class degree in Graphic Design or a related subject
• Ability to summarise complex data and messages in visual form, including direct experience creating infographics
• High level of proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), Adobe Acrobat, and Microsoft Office
• Knowledge of typesetting, pre-press and print processes
• Knowledge of graphic design best practices and principles for both print and web projects
• Experience in managing brand compliance
• Excellent project and time management skills
• Self-motivated, with the enthusiasm and passion to generate new ideas and produce great work
• Experience of influencing and persuading individuals from different disciplines to deliver excellent outputs
• Good grammar, spelling, and attention to detail
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• An understanding of HTML, CSS, UX and web design in general
• Experience using Adobe After Effects or similar to create motion graphics and animations
• Experience developing innovative design and visual content
• Experience in providing brand and design training to colleagues
• Experience working with a strong brand
• Experience in reviewing and refreshing a brand
