Hurst Media Company, a rapidly growing independent media company which specialises in contract publishing, is seeking an experienced editorial designer for our portfolio of titles.

The designer will be expected to design across our range of publications, which are distributed with both the newsstand and the national press. Our titles include: Celebrity Secrets, which is distributed with OK! bumper packs, and The Countryside Experience and Arts, Antiques & Collectibles, both of which go out with The Telegraph.

In addition, you will be expected to design for our advertising partners in spreads for The Guardian, The Times, Evening Standard and Observer. This will involve designing adverts and advertorials, as well as communicating with clients to ensure their copy meets the house style.

Brand guidelines and workflow are already well-established for our existing titles, but you will be getting to work straightaway on developing our exciting new projects for this year and the next. There will also be additional ad-hoc design work for producing brand assets, web graphics, etc. With such a varied role, strong organisational skills are essential.

We are looking for a self-starter who can demonstrate commitment and initiative. The position will involve you managing and working alongside a design and production assistant, so managerial experience is also desirable, although not essential.

This role would be an ideal step-up in your career, with promising prospects for future development as the business expands its print and online portfolio. Previous print and magazine design experience is required and you will ideally have a degree in a relevant subject from a good university.

We are looking for an energetic, driven individual whose passion will take our publications to the next level. Candidates are expected to be familiar with our titles.


- Thorough working knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
- Good understanding of print production, image reproduction, artworking and PDF output for press
- Experience in a print publishing environment
- Bachelor degree or relevant design-related qualifications or proven experience
- Must be organised and have an appreciation of workflow, version control, font management and digital asset management
- Fluent English speaker, comfortable making phone calls to chase clients
- Excellent attention to detail


- Understanding of digital design
- Basic knowledge of HTML/CSS and web design an advantage, but not required
- Online newsletter/web design experience would put you at a strong advantage
