The Economist is a prestigious, global news company covering international business and world affairs, first published in 1843. We deliver our information through a range of formats from websites and a range of apps to newspapers, magazines, film and radio. What ties us together is the objectivity of our opinion, the originality of our insight and our advocacy of political and economic freedom and democracy around the world.

We are seeking a creative, senior-level digital-designer to work primarily on The Economist‘s weekly “Snapchat Discover” edition. You’ll report to the Head of Graphics as part of the London-based editorial design team under the guidance of the Art Director. However you’ll also work very closely with Snapchat editors and animators, both in London and remotely with overseas staff.

Using creative design and illustration you’ll produce as many as 20 imaginative and compelling “snaps” per edition. You’ll take part in editorial edition planning meetings and create storyboards, roughs and wireframes ahead of finalised artwork.

Although the edition is published weekly, you’ll often be working on more than one edition at a time, building up “reserve” editions and reacting to breaking news stories. The majority of slides are animated and must be designed with motion in mind. Although you’ll work alongside dedicated animators, you’ll also possess some level of animation expertise.

Candidates must be experienced and able to demonstrate a strong background in digital design, producing creative visual solutions while adhering to brand guidelines.

• Demonstrate creativity and imaginative design/illustration skills
• Deliver excellent artwork while upholding our brand style and values
• Work with multiple stakeholders, editors and animators across a number of time-zones
• Gather and agree requirements, helping to plan and develop design briefs for each edition
• Clearly articulate your design rationale and have the ability to present your work to your peers and stakeholders
• Keep up-to-date on innovations in the design world, and use this to keep your output fresh and relevant

• Solid experience in graphic design with editorial, branding or commercial design experience
• Strong Adobe Creative suite and/or Sketch skills
• Some knowledge and experience with animation and motion graphics tools
• Experience working to tight deadlines (newsroom experience would be beneficial)
• A particularly keen attention to detail!
• Robust typographic and information design abilities

• Self-motivation, and the ability to perform well and stay calm under pressure
• A keen interest in global politics and current affairs
• Friendly and receptive demeanour, an enthusiastic team-worker
• A good level of general education, a design degree or equivalent qualification would be preferable
• Good communication skills and fluency in English
