Junior Digital Designer (initial 8-month contract) - Central London

Role description:


We are seeking a junior-level digital designer who will work as part of our London-based editorial design team. Reporting to the Head of Graphics and under the guidance of the Art Director and Senior Digital Designer, the successful candidate will work closely with the publication’s digital team on a wide variety of projects.


You will help in producing creative and comprehensive designs for new and existing digital products, internal tools and commercial campaigns. You will also work on our email newsletters, making frequent revisions that are tested and measured accordingly.


Candidates must be able to demonstrate a strong portfolio and practical design experience, producing creative visual solutions whilst observing best practices.


Expectations and responsibilities:


• Deliver compelling design across our product base while articulating and upholding the brand values
• Follow closely the guidance of The Economist’s Design System in order to integrate styling and components within new and existing digital products
• Manage design revisions and daily output of our email newsletters
• Assist in producing image and media assets, documentation and other administrative design tasks
• Help to gather and agree requirements for developing and planning design briefs
• Clearly articulate your design rationale with the confidence to present your work to your peers and stakeholders
• Keep up-to-date on innovations in the design world, and use this to keep your output fresh and relevant


You will be able to demonstrate:


• Solid experience of designing for web and digital
• An excellent eye for detail and firm understanding of typographic principles
• Some knowledge of CSS, HTML, and rapid prototyping tools
• Some experience designing or coding email newsletters
• Demonstrable experience of working in Sketch, the Adobe suite or equivalent software
• Experience working across digital platforms and devices, including design for different screen sizes
• Experience working to tight deadlines
• An appreciation for user experience and user-centred design


Other requirements:


• Minimum six-months practical real-world experience
• Self-motivation, and the ability to perform well and stay calm under pressure
• A keen interest in global politics and current affairs
• Friendly and receptive demeanour, an enthusiastic team-worker
• A good level of general education, a design degree or equivalent qualification would be preferable
• Good communication skills and fluency in English


Contract: Initial 8-month contract (with the possibility of a longer-term position to follow)


Hours: 10am-6pm, Mon-Fri Start date: ASAP Salary: £TBC
