About Tortoise
Tortoise is a news startup, focused on creating a new kind of journalism. Unlike traditional media organisations our aim isn't to overwhelm but to publish a handful of stories a week – we're trying to slow down and wise up. We do this in two ways; with a daily editorial event we call the ThinkIn, and by publishing stories in our app and in our quarterly journal.

From a design perspective we’re trying to do something a bit different as well, treating each of our stories like a feature; engaging with information designers, data scientists, motion designers and illustrators to explain and accompany our journalism. We’re mainly digital. Our stories are published in our app and on our website but we also create printed booklets for our daily events and we publish a printed quarterly publication.

The role
We're looking for a designer with editorial or branding experience. As a startup, projects move quickly and can change last minute, however, there is great potential to shape what we're doing and be part of the decision making. Candidates will be comfortable working on print and digital projects and some animation skills would be an advantage. You’ll be working as part of a small team of designers alongside journalists and editors in our central London newsroom. Be part of something new, using your skills to help people understand the world around them.

Requirements
– 1–2 years experience
– Positive, can-do attitude; willing to learn new skills to complete tasks
– Self-motivated and proactive
– Ability to work under pressure and with changing deadlines
– Attention to detail with a careful eye for typography
– Interested in current events, world news and the media landscape
