59 Productions is a design studio and production company that works across a range of industries and media. From providing set design, animation production and projection design for stage shows and large scale events, to working with brands, arts institutions and festivals to create original and engaging audience experiences, 59’s output is characterized by its diversity and world class quality.

Our in-house team includes designers, architects, technologists, writers, directors and producers. Our roster of regular collaborators includes the National Theatre, the English National Opera, The Royal Opera, Metropolitan Opera New York, Historic Royal Palaces, Edinburgh International Festival, The Young Vic and The Royal Ballet. 59 Productions is currently expanding its slate of self-produced projects.

Overall purpose of the job:

To play a leading role in the work of the Video Design Department across a broad range of projects in collaboration with the Architectural, Technical & Production teams.

Day to day responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

• Leading the design process on individual projects
• Leading the project design team
• Working directly with Designers and Directors to analyse and interpret a client brief
• Conceiving and creating design-led responses to a brief
• Presenting design responses to a brief at various stages of a project development
• Attending client-facing design meetings alongside the Project Director in order to assimilate and understand a creative brief, to present design work, or receive feedback
• Convening, facilitating and engaging in internal design discussions, reviews and critical feedback
• Orchestrating and delivering internal and client-facing design presentations
• Personally undertaking still and animated design work at a number of different developmental stages, including:
o Conceptual design
o Storyboarding
o Visualisation
o Animation (2d and 3d)
o Compositing
• Planning and scheduling the design process on projects
• Overseeing the documenting and archiving of projects

Managerial / administrative

• Consulting with the head of video and studio coordinator on planning for freelance and subcontracted staffing across projects
• Contributing to the ongoing creative dialogue, skills-exchange and learning environment within the design studio and across the broader company
• Working with the senior design team to build departmental design processes and protocols to ensure continuing improvements in innovation and quality of design output
• Identifying opportunities for departmental development in both creative and technical areas, including the adoption of new hardware- and software-driven processes
• Line-managing more junior Designers in the Video Design Department

Person Specification


• Experienced designer with at least 7 years industry experience in:
o Design/Art Direction
o Animation
o Video design
• Highly proficient in Photoshop and After Effects
• Experience of working on all aspects of projects from storyboarding, look frames and visualisations
• Experience of creatively leading a multi-disciplinary design team
• Ability to work well under pressure and comfortable working to deadlines
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
• Competent across Microsoft Office suite
• A proven ability and willingness to work as part of a broad team across different disciplines

• Knowledge of at least one 3D package, preferably Cinema 4D
• Experience working on VR and AR projects
• Experience of scripting, expressions and parametric modelling
• Experience writing and developing treatments, narratives and scripts
