About you

You’re an experienced digital designer who is passionate about creating great user experiences. Your keen eye for detail and impeccable design skills will include digital typography, layout, colour and brand application. Crucially, you will have a solid understanding of user-centred design principles and usability issues (including responsive design), and a working knowledge of the basics of web development.

You will have the confidence and communication skills to engage directly with clients – to understand their expectations and to explain your decisions to them – along with the organisational and mentoring skills to lead a small team of digital designers; co-ordinating their efforts with web developers, project managers and other colleagues across the agency. If you have management experience that would be a distinct bonus.

While you’re not afraid of working to tight deadlines or within limited project budgets, you always find the time to stay on top of new trends and innovations in digital communications and find ways to apply them to your own work. It would also be great if you had some knowledge or experience of policy, research or NGO communications.

And, of course, you must have permission to work in the UK by the start of your employment.

About the job

There’s more to this job than producing great-looking, intuitive front end designs – although that’s a given, of course.

We expect our digital designers to engage closely and directly with our clients from the start of any project, as it’s vital that you understand the goals of the project, the needs and behaviours of the target audiences and the types of content that will appear on the platform we’ve been asked to create. This can include reviewing client documentation, running stakeholder workshops, conducting user research and auditing existing websites. You will then be expected to use the insights you’ve gained to develop the content structure, wireframes and page designs – and, of course, to present and explain your decisions to the client.

You will also provide line management, direction and support to two digital designers, setting their targets, reviewing their performance and carrying out appraisals. They will look to you for support as they work on their own projects. You will have an overview of all the digital design team’s work and help ensure it is of high quality and always takes account of best practice and wider developments in the field. We want you to be confident in representing the agency and sharing our thinking with wider audiences – at events, on social media and other forums, and perhaps even writing blog posts and articles.

You will play a key role in helping our operations and new business teams to develop proposals, pitches and project plans, as well as advising on scheduling and work allocation for your team. We would also expect you to play a wider role in helping to improve our processes and foster a spirit of creative collaboration between your team and others in the agency.

Our competitive salary and benefits package includes:

25 days holiday per year, plus Christmas closure
Regular social activities
Cycle to work and Tech loans
Flexible working around core hours
On the rare occasions when you’ll have to work overtime, we’ll make sure you get the time back.

About us

Soapbox’s mission is to communicate ideas that matter, working for charities, NGOs, think tanks and research organisations to make sure their messages reach the right audiences.

We started out in print design in 2008, but digital is the next biggest – and fastest-growing – part of our business. We are a close-knit, hard-working and ambitious agency with a growing roster of clients both in the UK and around the world, including Chatham House, Imperial College London, UNICEF and many more. Our recently launched US operation already works with the New America Foundation and the FrameWorks Institute, among others.

Most of our digital projects involve the delivery of an organisational website, but we also build smaller sites and other products, including our flagship online reader. You can see many examples of our past work on our website ( Our other specialisms include branding, editorial, animation and strategic communications consulting.

We expect all our staff to act autonomously and take responsibility for their own projects – with support when they need it, of course – so they can feel a personal sense of accomplishment when we successfully complete a piece of work. We look after our people and they tend to stay with us. We have an informal all-agency meeting via video conference each week and there’s a calendar of staff events across the year, including a summer picnic and Christmas walk.

We have two studios – one with stunning views over the City and East End in Whitechapel, and the other on the banks of the Avon in the centre of Bath (this role can be based at either). Both studios have been fitted out to a high standard, with excellent social spaces.

If that sounds appealing, get in touch.
