Who we are:

GemFair is a start-up that aims to create a digital solution that provides a secure and transparent route to market for ethically-sourced artisanal and small-scale mined diamonds. By providing artisanal and small-scale miners with access to the global market and offering fair prices, GemFair hopes to improve miners’ livelihoods and foster the sector’s development as a credible and trusted source of diamond supply.

GemFair launched as a pilot project in April 2018. Since then we have made significant progress across operations, product developments and have recently expanded to create more opportunities for artisanal and small-scale miners in Sierra Leone.

Who are we looking for:

As we scale up our operations, we are widening our product range to provide more services and designing user-centered features tailored to miners in the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector.

Beyond that, we're looking for someone who embraces collaboration, pushes innovation, is eager to learn and open to new things. The most important skill to bring to the table is the ability to think differently.

Within the small team, you will need to wear different hats, working across user research, prototyping and user testing. We don’t expect you to be an expert in each area, but would like to offer you the opportunity to participate in and explore different stages of the design process.

• Whatever your tools of choice, you wield them with deftness and speed and have familiarity with Front-End engineering and/or working with engineers.
• Understanding of user-centered design principles, with the ability to apply brand visual assets in a user interface context.

What will you learn/get for this internship:

• A 10-week paid internship, ideally starting from mid-July 2019.
• Mentorship from our lead designer for the full 10 weeks, helping you to expand on your design knowledge and expertise, and guiding you towards greatness.
• To improve your craft as a Product Designer and sharpening your research, wireframing, UI and prototyping skills.
• You’ll become familiar with design and prototyping tools online and work with them.
• To work to a brief and also produce a few briefs.
• To bring your ideas to reality and how it works in the context of the team with developers.
