Beyond Words is one of the world’s leading data visualization studios. Based in East London, we’re a multi-disciplinary team of journalists, researchers, designers and developers.

We create data visualizations exploring vital topics as varied as health, technology, money, work and culture. We do this for world-changing clients such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, WHO, United Nations, Visa and the BBC.

We’re a close, collaborative team who like to do great work, help each other to learn and grow, and socialise regularly.

//What the role involves://

As a Data Journalist, you’d be responsible for developing data stories, researching, sourcing and analysing data, and working with the designers, developers, editorial and animators to deliver the final visualization.

//Responsibilities include://

- Analysing, exploring and structuring data
- Researching suitable sources of data where necessary
- Ensuring all data sources are accurate and reliable
- Presenting verbal/written briefs to members of the team about the data
- Creating concepts and potential stories based on client briefs
- Ensuring all copy is accurate, engaging and follows the right tone of voice, working with the Editor as necessary
- Participating in sketch sessions and reviewing with the designers
- Check the visualization at various stages to make sure the data included is accurate

//Knowledge, skills and experience we’re looking for://

- Experience of using technology (e.g. spreadsheets, R, Python) to analyse and explore data
- Experience of understanding and structuring data in a way that makes it simple for others to grasp
- Editorial experience in writing and shaping copy and creative concepts
- Experience researching both simple and complex subjects across any domain (from environment, health and science to sport, culture and gender)
- Experience of working with creative teams
- High degree of digital product and computer literacy
- Good communication and written skills
- An understanding of and interest in data viz and information design
