KERRANG! – the world’s greatest rock brand since 1981 - is seeking a talented Deputy Art Editor who can work across print, digital, video and events.

As well as working on the weekly edition of the magazine, the successful candidate will need to posses a strong understanding of digital design for what is a unique, multi-disciplined position.

With offices in London and New York, KERRANG! is growing internationally. You will be based in our London office and you will be part of a tight-knit team that produces exclusive content across all platforms for a worldwide audience on a daily basis.

As well as a passion for rock music, you must have proven design experience at a high level, and be capable of working at speed with the ability to communicate clearly and assume leadership on projects as required.

An advanced understanding of print production and reprographics is required alongside full working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, specifically InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.

KERRANG!: THE WORLD’S GREATEST ROCK BRAND SINCE 1981

Created by rock fans for rock fans, KERRANG! was the first magazine dedicated solely to heavy music. It has since expanded far beyond the printed page to become a multi-platform, international brand with offices in London and New York.

Kerrang! is seeking a talented Deputy Art Editor who can work across print, digital, video and events.

Our heritage is print, and a passion for printed design is a must, however a strong digital vision is also essential in a constantly shifting media landscape.

This is an incredible opportunity to join Kerrang! at a time when the brand is growing on a worldwide basis and evolving in genuinely exciting ways. You will be part of a close, London-based team who create engaging content on a daily basis across all platforms.

Exceptional time management is required as you will be balancing competing priorities and multiple projects while meeting strict deadlines.

It is also imperative that the Deputy Art Editor demonstrates the necessary leadership skills to take full responsibility of the KERRANG! Art Desk in the absence of Art Editor.

Responsibilities and Duties:

The principal elements of the role of Deputy Art Editor are as follows:

- Designing editorial layouts, typesetting and image editing for print.

- Working with production and editorial departments to ensure deadlines are met.

- Working closely with Editors, Art Editor and the commercial team to create content.

- Managing the design process from conception through to execution.

- Assisting with branding and promotional design requirements.

- Assisting with commercial pitches, presentations and other documents.

- Managing archives and other design assets.

- Working well as part of a team to contribute ideas and design artwork for other projects.

- Remaining up to date with the latest design trends.

In Detail

Here is an overview of the component parts of the role:

1/ Print:

Kerrang! is Britain’s only weekly music magazine, driven by access to the world’s most legendary artists and the hottest new acts.

In your role you will be expect to:

- Oversee the weekly design and production of the magazine to the high quality.

- Ensure that the magazine is consistent, follows the style guide and is constantly fresh and engaging.

- Possess an advanced understanding of print production, retouching and reprographics (all of Kerrang!’s production is handled in-house by the art team).

- Brief, art direct and co-ordinate multiple shoots simultaneously for the magazine.

- Generate and deliver strong ideas and creative concepts.

- Possess a knowledge of photographers and their differing styles.

- Manage budgets effectively.

2/ Digital:

Kerrang.com is staffed by teams in both London and New York, and is growing at a rapid rate. The same is true of Kerrang!’s development across its social channels – allowing us a monthly reach of 45 million.

You will be expect to:

- Generate artwork for the website, social media and events.

- Undertake picture research for the site and all channels.

- Contribute to the growth of Kerrang!’s Instagram feed.

- Liaise with the art team in Kerrang!’s US office.

- Work on commercial partnerships and assist with creating clear, impactful decks for the pitching process.

- Deliver all design swiftly and to a high standard.

- Understand current digital trends.

3/ Video:

Kerrang! generates video content in both the UK and the US. Our aim is to grow our video content even further in the next year.

You will be expected to:

- Contribute fully to Kerrang!’s video strategy .

- Create promotional assets for our video properties – including our weekly live series, The K! Pit – is essential.

- Possess a basic knowledge of video editing for promotional purposes.

- [NB: There is also scope to become part of the wider filming team – subject to time management and your ability to fulfil your other key responsibilities]

4/ Events

Our events include the Kerrang! Awards, club nights and exhibitions.

You will be expected to:

- Contribute to the look and feel of all Kerrang! events.

- Design branding and promotional assets for all Kerrang! events.

- Create merchandise for our events and third party partners.

- Create pitch documents for new events.

Qualifications/Skills

The successful candidate will possess the following skills:

- Experience across all aspects of design with proven editorial and/or commercial experience in a similar role.

- Exceptional creativity and a flair for design.

- Leadership and management skills.

- Excellent time management and organisational skills.

- Accuracy and attention to detail.

- A professional approach to timekeeping, costs and deadlines.

- An understanding of print processes.

- Excellence in using Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.
