Job Description
Are you passionate about global storytelling and bringing diverse perspectives to an English-speaking audience?
Join Translator, a new magazine of translated journalism and reportage from around the world, for the open minded and the language curious. We’re hiring an editor 2-3 days a week as a member of our editorial team to help us ensure that we source and translate articles from all parts of the globe.
What you’ll be doing
Day-to-day, you will:
- Help curate possible articles to translate into English from our sources, or summarise
- Explore the landscape of non-fiction writing in languages other than English to find articles and book chapters suitable for our translation and liaise with publications as necessary
- Help constantly update our records of suitable non English language publications and translators
- Help with summarisations of articles from languages other than English including verification, fact-checking and translation-checking
- Liaise with translators and other editors, both internally and externally, as necessary
- Contribute to enhancing the linguistic reach of Translator
About you…
We’re looking for someone who is:
- Excited about journalism and writing in languages other than English. You’re a keen reader of political, social and cultural writing in languages other than English. You have a research/editorial background and regularly reads, or is able to read, in languages other than English, and preferably languages spoken predominantly outside Europe.
- Passionate about amplifying voices from outside the Anglosphere. A believer that we can better understand the world and our place in it if we’re able to read what is being written in languages other than our own. An awareness of the publishing landscape outside the Anglosphere would be an advantage.
- Experienced in editing and/or translating in an international context. You get the value of sensitive editing and translation to make another person’s writing a pleasure to read in English, and understand the role of editorial judgement to give the reader confidence in what they are reading. You have a minimum 2-3 years’ editorial/translating experience, ideally working with a publication (magazine, book publishing, newspaper). But if you have more, or much more, experience, we’d be delighted to talk.
- Happy to work in a dynamic start-up environment. Everyone’s contribution matters. You have a can-do attitude to getting stuff done, able to engage with potential external partners (publications, translators), and excited to both share your ideas and learn from others, openly and respectfully.
