Job Description

Are you passionate about great design for meaningful publications?

Join Translator, a new magazine of translated journalism and reportage from around the world, for the open minded and the language curious. As our Communications & Design Manager working 3 days a week, you’ll help us with our online presence, marketing and graphic design, as a key member of the start-up team.

What you’ll be doing

Day-to-day, you will:

  • Design, help originate and schedule social media posts, working with the editorial team to ensure coherence and consistency with our newsletter and magazine
  • Help us build our online reach, and come up with ideas for how we can do it better
  • Manage our website, including content management
  • Liaise with the external design team for the paper magazine

About you…

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Excited about building a social media presence for a new publication. You’re entrepreneurial with a graphic design or digital marketing background and 2-3 years’ experience and can help us build our web presence (site, newsletter) and social media reach as a new start up. Experience in a magazine or publishing context would be an advantage.

  • Experienced in working with different media. You’re comfortable with words and visuals, and can help us maintain a coherent, smart, fun visual language across social media, our newsletter, the web and the paper magazine. If you are handy with a camera, that’s great too.

  • Passionate about amplifying voices from outside the Anglosphere. Translator loves language, so we hope you do too. You read and write English fluently. If you are able to speak and read in another language, or two, or three, that would be an advantage.

  • Interested in the world of publishing, political and social affairs, culture, and technology. You’re someone with wide interests, who is curious about the world around them, and happy to share that curiosity with others.

  • Confident in your technological skills. You have the relevant basic technological skills to manage a (simple) website and social media accounts with ease, including social media scheduling software, Adobe etc.

  • Happy to work in a dynamic start-up environment. Everyone’s contribution matters. You’re a self-starter with a can-do attitude to getting stuff done excited to both share their ideas and learn from others, openly and respectfully.

About Translator

Translator is a start-up magazine that wants to help change the way we read the world by making the best non-English language reportage writing available to an English language audience.

We’re starting with a weekly email newsletter of summaries of the best reportage writing from around the world in early 2025. The paper magazine, translating full articles into English, with a range of other content including reviews, photography and some commissioned pieces will start later in the year.

At a minimum, fifty per cent of any surplus we make will be given to charities that support translation and translators or writing and writers in languages other than English.

What we can offer you

  • Creative input in the journey of a start-up publication, helping to shape and grow its online identity
  • Opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the world around you
  • Work with interesting partners in magazine design
  • A meaningful job in a meaningful publication

How to apply

Write us an email at admin@translatormag.co before 31 January 2025, including your resume, a cover letter, your portfolio showcasing your design or marketing work.

We look forward to hearing from you!
