Design Director
Job Description
About Us
We founded Minor Figures in 2014, launching with just one carton of cold brew. We’ve since expanded into a global market with a wide range of killer products, a strong brand identity, and a small but significant market share. We’re growing fast and we now have an opportunity to scale up and touch millions more lives as we learn, extend our product range, and deepen our focus on innovation and sustainability. The creative team is passionate and talented with an innovative NPD pipe.
About You
We’re looking for an experienced and versatile Design Director to join the Creative team at Minor Figures. Reporting into our two Creative Directors, you’ll bring a wealth of experience in not only design but leading a team throughout a variety of commercial brand and marketing projects. You’ll be excited to take our global brand to the next level and be brimming with ideas as to how you’d like to see our in-house creative team grow, push boundaries, and create amazing work in a variety of campaigns across multiple platforms.
We’re a small outfit but growing FAST; we need someone to lead our expanding team of designers to create exceptional work that will innovate, excite and amuse. Enthusiasm is paramount in this role - we’re looking for someone who will ensure that our creative output is always at a high standard, whilst surprising and delighting our customers at every turn.
We’re looking for someone with a portfolio of work that demonstrates your creative vision as well as your solid rational design thinking - but this is not your average in-house design job. Minor Figures is built by people who question the very notion of 'branding' and reject the dull, traditional practises of the corporate world.
Contract type: Full time
Years of experience: Minimum 8 years working in design studios or in-house.
Salary: Dependent on experience
Location: London
Roles and responsibilities
Manage a small but growing team of designers (midweight and junior), delegating work and providing consistent and constructive feedback. You will be invested in developing their skills and experience.
Your work and that of the team you lead will consistently reflect the brand values and visual identity; you will have a deep understanding of what is or isn’t ‘us’ and be able to respond to projects and campaigns accordingly.
Receive and respond to briefs in a creative and considerate way, factoring in a variety of elements including tone-of-voice, budget, and logistical constraints.
Contribute to regular brainstorming sessions with our Creative Directors and the wider team.
Design engaging treatments with a strong emphasis on visual storytelling.
Work collaboratively with the various teams across the organisation in the UK, Australia, and the US.
Ensure that Minor Figures creative output remains at a high standard.
Help nurture and grow the creative team, as we grow as a business.
Push boundaries and help take Minor Figures to places we haven’t been before.
Personal Skills
Strong leadership skills.
Ambition - you want to see your team (and by extension, Minor Figures) go far, and you’re full of future-facing ideas.
Experience with printed and digital design are essential; experience with animation and/or photography and videography would be a bonus.
A strong portfolio of ideas that demonstrates both a creative and strategic understanding.
Exceptional knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign/Illustrator/Photoshop). Skills in After Effects, Premiere Pro, Sketch, Figma would also be beneficial.
Awareness of current design trends and new ways of working.
Adaptability and being comfortable with change will get you far - you’ll need to be comfortable working with a remote team and communicating with teams in different time zones.
A high level of accuracy and obsessive attention to detail.
Excellent at communicating.
A positive, can-do attitude.
A cracking sense of humor...and if you can also make a good cup of coffee, you’ll fit right in.
