Design Director

Position Summary:

The Design department within Wieden+Kennedy works to create a visual world in which our clients stories, voice and business come to life. We believe everything stems from a larger strategic brand idea. We work on a range of design, branding, strategy, and advertising projects. Whatever, wherever, however a brand communicates, we love to do it.

Designers concept and create visual design solutions to a large variety of problems ranging from graphic design and brand systems to advertising campaigns large and small. All work at W+K is done in teams and the ability to collaborate with other creatives partners and non-creative team members in the development of ideas is fundamental to the role. Bringing a strong creative point of view is expected, but knowing when to listen and collaborate is key. Designers help make the team better and stronger through approach, methodology, work, and craft. Established strong knowledge of skills including graphic design, identity design, branding systems, typography, storytelling, and photography are needed. Ability to work in motion and 3D encouraged.

Director Level Expectations:

• Set a clear and inspiring design vision for the projects and brands you work on, identifying opportunities and pushing the work to be the best it can be. You aspire to make work that goes beyond advertising and pushes into culture and people’s everyday lives.
• You will lead a team of designers and makers to produce appropriate and exciting work.
• You are responsible for all aspects of the work, from concept to final execution. You are here because you share our ridiculously high creative bar, and we want you to raise the standards of everyone around you.
• You have excellent taste, judgment and craft skills and are able to flex how you work to accommodate big and small budgets, helping others on the team to do the same.
• You bring fresh and relevant references to help shape the work.
• You will provide leadership, wisdom, and professional development to designers on your team; including mentorship, feedback and training. You will be able to have both difficult and brilliant conversations with your team.
• You understand the entirety of the project lifecycle from brief to delivery and documentation. Your experience allows you to see issues before they arise and you are able to problem-solve on the fly.
• A strategic thinker, you are an excellent partner to planning and account management as well as creative.
• You will build and maintain top-level client relationships in a way that feels appropriate and authentic to you (we know not everyone is a schmoozer and that’s OK). You are responsible for articulating to clients how our design work helps solve their problem.
